why therapy helps
Many people wonder why working with a therapist is better than doing it on their own. The kind of therapy I provide is based on the neuroscience of emotions and relationships. Our brains are wired for connection and we cannot heal in isolation. Instead of problem-solving, we will focus on present-moment feelings and experiences that come up as you tell your story. This will allow you to access parts of yourself that are outside of your conscious awareness. Healing happens through being seen and accepted and having new experiences that create new pathways in your brain.
We know that adverse childhood (and even adult) experiences create emotional and even physical problems throughout life, but we also know that there is hope. Therapy can help reverse those effects, and our brains and bodies can literally change! Many of us grew up having to hide “unacceptable” parts of ourselves in order to survive. Therapy can stir up those parts of ourselves that might feel vulnerable or unacceptable and allow them to be seen and nurtured. This might sound scary, which is why we want to take things slow. We need time build a safe therapeutic relationship where you can trust that I will be with you every step of the way while also respecting your space and autonomy.
